What I Wish I Had Known in 1989 Joyce Hurt 9781524578213 Books
This handbook is a must-read for beginning teachers (veteran teachers will benefit, too---it's a nice reminder of our purpose). With genuine experience and wit, Hurt covers the real-life dilemmas and issues we teachers face in the classroom, particularly the lessons no college course could prepare us for. The handbook is unlike many other educational writings (and I've read a lot) as it is infused with anecdotes and a common-sense approach vs. statistics and mind-numbing percentages, citations, and fact after fact. This book is about REAL teaching. Experience is the best educator, and Hurt's voice speaks of years of experience and expertise.Product details

What I Wish I Had Known in 1989 Joyce Hurt 9781524578213 Books Reviews
Everything Joy Hurt does is meaningful and intentional. You can't go wrong with this read, whether you are a teacher or not.
Joy Hurt wastes no time in this book and delves right into practical actions new and veteran educators can take to become more effective teachers. Her advice is supported by accounts from her own experience and is presented in a manner that engages the reader. She masterfully presents information that one does not learn in one's education courses but that one needs to know in order to do what is best for students and lead them to become confident, passionate learners. She has kept the book free of mind numbing research data and concisely presents her valuable advice. Each sentence is on the mark, and the book is not loaded with extraneous material. It's not a long read, but it is a valuable one. I know I certainly wish there had been a book like this when I began teaching, and it would have been a refreshing confirmation later in my career.
This book is even better for the veteran teacher than the new one. It gives quick reminders along with anecdotes that made me (a 20 year teacher) nod in agreement and then grade papers for timely feedback.
In this concise and highly readable book, Dr. Hurt reveals her compassion for her students that has made her the excellent educator that she is. Experienced teachers will nod in agreement with the advice that she shares with the novice. Her practical and common-sense approach to teaching should be required reading for all new teachers. It will serve to remind ALL educators of their commitment to their profession at any stage of their career. A+
Well, I wrote this book myself, so of course, I am giving it five stars. I intentionally made it easy to read and full of practical advice. If you are a new teacher or a veteran one who may have lost your focus, this little handbook may help you.
